History of Russia

Some communities located in Russia were first heard of in the 4th century with the creation of the initial ethnic union of the Eastern Slavs. In the 5th century, another ethnic group of Eastern Slavs was formed, that is the Polyants in the basin of the then Dnieper River. It was claimed that the first documented history of the Rus and the Rush was created during this era. Later on, the Avars fought and took over the Slavic tribe of Dulebes. This marked the beginning of an era of subsequent defeats and conquers as well as the expansion of the Slav nation. This era lasted for more than 300 years. At the start of the 18th century, the Slavonic tribes started to resettle in the higher basins of the Western Dvina, Volga Rivers, and the Dnieper.

Towards the end of the 18th century, the Slavic tribes had to deal with payment of tribute to the Polyants, Severian, Radimichi, and Vyatichi. Russia maintained its independence during this period, unlike other states like the Black Sea that was defeated by the Mongols from Central Asia. Russia’s dependence from the Khans was seen in the tribute which the people were mandated to pay to invaders.

The cultural event which the Slavic people held on the later part of the ancient Russian state was known with the formation of the Slavic letters by Methodius and Cyril in the middle of the ninth century. The Russian dialect was then known as the source of the cultural history of Russian and the language looked the same as other Slavic languages. That century marked the beginning of the reign of Oleg who is popular for the role he played in the unification of the Kiev and Novgorod. He was also the person that transferred the capital city from Novgorod to Kiev. The newly established dynasty conquered and dominated other tribes like the Radimichi, Krivichi, the Drevlyane and the Severians. This gave rise to the formation of the Rus. The Mongol state was formed at the beginning of the 13th century in Central Asia.

The Russian Empire was formed by the great Peter and it started with the reforms which have never been experienced by the country before then. Some of the reforms which Peter initiated was a transformation in industrialization, a government and administrative reform, military reform, and finance and trade reforms and major changes in the foreign policies of the country, church reforms, and education reforms.

Moscow became the state capital after the socialist revolution that took place in 1917. A communist in the person of Vladimir Lenin came into power. In 1922, there was a civil war that this led to the emergence of the Union Soviet Socialist Republics. This Soviet Union lasted for 70 years. This union was dissolved in 1992, and it was followed by a phase of self-formation of republics from the former Soviet Unions. The largest of the factions being the Russian Federation.
